The artist's books of Robert Jacks
24 October - 29 November 2009
Robert Jacks has been making artists books as a key element of his practice since the mid-1960s. These books range from one-off works to multiples and editions using a variety of printing techniques from hand stamping and etching to collage, photography and other media. While Jacks is primarily recognised as a painter, his practice has always included the production of sculptural works, as well as prints, drawings and works in other media. The production of books as both an end in themselves, and as a site for the development of painting, sculptural and conceptual work is an essential, but under-examined, aspect of Robert Jacks’ continuing practice. Rather than merely displaying these books as static objects, Jacks has been filmed working through the books on a visual journey through his art practice. This project is supported by Arts Victoria. Exhibition curated by Peter Anderson.
The development of this exhibition was assisted through NETS Victoria’s Exhibition Development Fund (EDF), supported by the Victorian Government through Arts Victoria and the Community Support Fund.
